Natural Plant Dyes Workshop

Join artist Joanna Hopkins for an afternoon workshop in how to source and make natural dyes from local plants.

We’re celebrating heritage week at North Mayo Heritage Centre with an afternoon workshop all about natural plant dyes, where participants will learn how to gather, chop, simmer and dye with local plant materials for dying fabric.

We’ll start with a short guided walk to gather plants for our workshop, where we’ll learn how to identity and safely collect native, non-native and invasive plant species. In the studio Joanna will show us how to prepare and process plant materials for making natural dyes, and we’ll create a selection of fabric dyes to test.

We’ll also be gathering local stories and folklore about plants, and participants are invited to share these in the workshop. You'll be contributing to creating a temporary artwork for the Wilderland project, and also be able to bring home some dyed fabric samples. All materials supplied.

North Mayo Heritage Centre Organic Gardens 30th Anniversary Open Day

North Mayo Heritage Centre is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of its Organic Gardens with an Open Day on 17th August also, so why not come along before the plant dyes workshop. You can visit this special, walled organic garden to learn about its history, meet the dedicated team of gardeners, and buy some of its heritage and organic fruit, vegetables and plants.

The Garden will be open from 12 pm to 3pm, and can be reached via the path along the wall from the North Mayo Heritage Centre carpark.
