Wilderland has two websites, one always-on, higher resolution website that is heavier to run, and one experimental, situated site, that is solar powered, and in the Nephin Park
The solar site might not always be on or available, it also has other quirks, and will be slower. Adjust your expectactions for this Permacomputing + Small Web alternative.
The hike will be led by Michael Chambers, Head Guide at Wild Nephin National Park and will start at the Letterkeen Trailhead. Michael will introduce us to the native plant and animal species that can be found in our mountain heath and upland grasslands, and we'll hear about the importance of these unique habitats in helping preserve our biodiversity. We'll also hear about the human impacts on these habitats and the threat from invasive species.
During the hike we will also be identifying and gathering native plants for artist Clare Breen and Kasia Kaminska's year-long collaborative plant collection project Flower Féilire, to produce a large-scale cyanotype artwork and calendar of Mayo's indigenous plant life.
The hike will include a demonstration of cyanotype sun-printing using to some of the collected plants, and participants are invited to return to Letterkeen for lunch and refreshments, and join Clare & Kasia's creative workshop from 2-4pm as part of our Summer Solstice Gathering.
All welcome.
FREE entry, no booking required.
Please note: this is a 6km hike with some areas of uneven ground, so please wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather!
This walk is the sixth in a series of plant walks taking place over the year as part of the Flower Féilire project. The walks follow the Celtic Calendar and coincide with the four cross quarter fire festivals - Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lúnasa and Samhain - the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes and the Winter and Summer Solstices. Each walk focuses on the different native plant life and habitats found in Wild Nephin National Park and surrounding areas.
