Wilderland has two websites, one always-on, higher resolution website that is heavier to run, and one experimental, situated site, that is solar powered, and in the Nephin Park
The solar site might not always be on or available, it also has other quirks, and will be slower. Adjust your expectactions for this Permacomputing + Small Web alternative.
We’re starting with a guided walk along the Altacooney river, led by Michael Chambers, Head Guide at Wild Nephin National Park. Michael will introduce us to the native plant and animal species that can be found in and along the rivers here, with some pond dipping to discover what aquatic plants and animals we can find.
We'll hear about the importance of these unique habitats in helping preserve our biodiversity, the human impacts on these river systems and threat from climate change and invasive species, and what we can do to help protect our rivers.
We’ll gather at Vary’s Cottage for refreshments, and our ‘Stone’ Shelter workshop with artist Mary Conroy. Mary will guide us through a hands-on workshop where'll we make ceramic shelters to help our animal friends. Just as walkers in Wild Nephin Park need a bothy for rest and shelter from the wild Mayo weather, so too do the animals and insects that live here!
In this workshop we’ll make ceramic animal shelters inspired by the geodiversity found in the rivers in North Mayo. These ‘stones’ will be placed in the landscape to be used as refuges, hibernation spaces, or permanent homes by small animals such as frogs, lizards and mice, or any number of the unique insect species that live here.
All welcome.
