Lúnasa Habitat Walk - Grassland

Join Wilderland for a habitat walk to learn all about grasslands, celebrate Lúnasa and mark the beginning of the harvest season.
The walk will be led by Michael Chambers, Head Guide at Wild Nephin National Park and will take place at the grassland meadow at Ballycroy. Michael will introduce us to the native plant species that can be found and we'll hear about the importance of these unique habitats in helping to support biodiversity.
Species-rich meadows and grasslands are among the most threatened habitats in Ireland. During this walk we’ll find out about the different types of grasslands and their management, how they can protect soil quality, help with carbon sequestration, and support a diversity of insect and animal life. We’ll also learn about how we can all help to create species-rich meadows - whether in your local area, on your land or in your garden.
During the walk we will also be identifying and gathering native plants for artists Clare Breen and Kasia Kaminska's year-long collaborative plant collection project Flower Féilire, to produce a large-scale cyanotype artwork and calendar of Mayo's indigenous plant life.

This walk is the seventh in a series of plant walks taking place over the year as part of the Flower Féilire project. The walks follow the Celtic Calendar and coincide with the four cross quarter fire festivals - Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lúnasa and Samhain - the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes and the Winter and Summer Solstices. Each walk focuses on the different native plant life and habitats found in Wild Nephin National Park and surrounding areas.
